These paintings are from the years 1990 to 1995. They represent the work of my last year in college, and my first years after. Artistically, this was a very productive time for me. Personally, it was a very turbulent time. The paintings tend to be morbid, self-absorbed, and more than a bit sophomoric. At the time, I fancied myself the incarnation of the angst-ridden, tormented genius, living on the edge. I was certainly angst-ridden, tormented and on the edge, but "genius" is reaching. While I no longer consider this stuff to be "Great Art," it is mine. I think there are some really good paintings here, just no pretty paintings. I don't wish to shut the door on them. I did get some small notice and a few sales from this work.
They are almost all mixed media on paper. When I mix media, I really mix media. Any one painting may contain oil paint, spray enamel, dry and/or oil pastel, charcoal, graphite, oil based printing inks, relief, serigraph and intaglio printing, solvent transfers from photocopies and magazine clippings, collage, polacolor transfer. polyurethane, liquid nails, bits of hair and dryer lint.
